Mountain guide

Five ways to spend a day off the lifts.

Snowmobiles after the lifts close, a backcountry dinner, a hunt for a hidden lamppost, trail rides, and sporting clays. These are the house picks on the mountain, each with a link to book.

Snowmobile tours

Once the lifts close, the resort sends guided snowmobile tours out on Cheat Mountain. Each tour runs about an hour, and the instructors pick safe routes, so the ride works for someone who has never sat on a snowmobile and for someone who wants to open it up. Tours leave from the slope side.

Children from 6 to 15 who are at least 46 inches tall can ride with an adult 16 or older, for an added cost, on tours between 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM. Adults cannot ride as passengers. Ski boots are not allowed, so change first and wear full-coverage clothing against the cold. Backcountry tours depend on natural snowfall. The resort lists departures every half hour from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM; check current details before booking.

Winter Adventure Dining

This is the one the house loves. Guests climb into a side-by-side off-road vehicle and head out the Cheat Ridge Trail under tall spruce, across terrain and views that few Snowshoe guests ever see, to the Sunrise Backcountry Hut for a three-course lunch or dinner. It is genuinely special. It also fills up, so book well in advance.

Tours start at the Base Area. Drivers must be 18 or older with a valid driver’s license. Riders must be at least 6 years old and 46 inches tall. Closed-toe shoes are required, and everyone signs a waiver at check-in. For dinner closer to home, see where to eat.

The Narnia lamppost

One of Snowshoe’s small local legends is a lamppost straight out of Narnia, standing on its own in the red spruce forest. Locals look for it in the woods near Snowcrest and the Bear Scat trail area. The resort’s own winter list calls it the Magic Lamp Post and points hikers to it off Top of the World.

The lamppost has been moved deeper into the woods now and then. In September 2026 it went missing from its spot near Bear Scat, and locals soon found it farther back in the spruce. That makes the walk a bit of a treasure hunt, especially in deep snow.

Before heading out: go in daylight, wear proper boots, and stay off groomed ski runs during operating hours unless the resort allows it.

Horseback riding at Autumn Breeze Stables

Autumn Breeze Stables runs guided Western-style trail rides at Snowshoe year round, for beginners through advanced riders. Rides last from 1 to 4 hours. There are also 30-minute lake rides for kids 8 and under, buggy rides, overnight trips with rustic camping in the Cheat Mountain backcountry, and one-horse open sleigh rides when conditions permit.

Every rider starts with the stable’s Horse 101 instruction: how to mount, start, stop, and control the horse, and what to do if something comes up on the trail. Out there, expect stream crossings, old log roads, forest trails, wetlands, and mountaintop views, with a chance of deer, turkey, and bear. The stable lists riders as ages 6 and up, with a weight limit of 220 pounds (240 for riders 6 feet 2 inches or taller). Come ready to make new friends and horse around.
